Joy in Jerusalem’s Future

10 “Be (A)joyful with Jerusalem and rejoice for her, all you who (B)love her;
Be exceedingly (C)glad with her, all you who mourn over her,
11 So that you may nurse and (D)be satisfied with her comforting breasts,
So that you may drink fully and be delighted with her (E)bountiful breasts.”
12 For this is what the Lord says: “Behold, I extend (F)peace to her like a river,
And the (G)glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
And you will [a]be nursed, you will be (H)carried on the [b]hip and rocked back and forth on the knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforts, so I will (I)comfort you;
And you will be comforted in Jerusalem.”
14 Then you will (J)see this, and your (K)heart will be glad,
And your (L)bones will flourish like the new grass;
And the (M)hand of the Lord will be made known to His servants,
But He will be (N)indignant toward His enemies.
15 For behold, the Lord will come in (O)fire,
And His (P)chariots like the whirlwind,
To render His anger with fury,
And His rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For the Lord will execute judgment by (Q)fire
And by His (R)sword on [c]humanity,
And those put to death by the Lord will be many.
17 “Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go to the (S)gardens,
[d]Following one in the center,
Who eat (T)pig’s flesh, detestable things, and mice,
Will (U)come to an end altogether,” declares the Lord.

18 “For I [e]know their works and their (V)thoughts; [f]the time is coming to (W)gather all the nations and tongues. And they shall come and see My glory. 19 And I will put a (X)sign among them and send survivors from them to the nations: (Y)Tarshish, [g]Put, (Z)Lud, [h]Meshech, (AA)Tubal, and [i]Javan, to the distant (AB)coastlands that have neither heard of My fame nor seen My glory. And they will (AC)declare My glory among the nations. 20 Then they shall (AD)bring all your countrymen from all the nations as a grain offering to the Lord, on horses, in chariots, in litters, on mules, and on camels, to My (AE)holy mountain Jerusalem,” says the Lord, “just as the sons of Israel bring their grain offering in a (AF)clean vessel to the house of the Lord. 21 I will also take some of them as (AG)priests and Levites,” says the Lord.

22 “For just as the (AH)new heavens and the new earth,
Which I make, will endure before Me,” declares the Lord,
“So will your (AI)descendants and your (AJ)name endure.
23 And it shall be from (AK)new moon to new moon
And from Sabbath to Sabbath,
All [j]mankind will come to (AL)bow down before Me,” says the Lord.
24 “Then they will go out and look
At the (AM)corpses of the people
Who have (AN)rebelled against Me.
For their (AO)worm will not die
(AP)And their fire will not be extinguished;
And they will be an (AQ)abhorrence to all [k]mankind.”

Jesus Begins His Ministry

12 Now when Jesus heard that (A)John had been taken into custody, (B)He withdrew into Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and (C)settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This happened so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled:

15 (D)The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
[a]By the way of the sea, on the other side of the Jordan, Galilee of the [b]Gentiles
16 (E)The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light,
And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death,
Upon them a Light dawned.”

17 (F)From that time Jesus began to [c]preach and say, (G)Repent, for the kingdom of heaven [d]is at hand.”

The First Disciples

18 (H)Now as Jesus was walking by (I)the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, (J)Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He *said to them, [e]Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of people.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there He saw two other brothers, [f](K)James the son of Zebedee, and his brother [g]John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Ministry in Galilee

23 Jesus was going (L)about in all of Galilee, (M)teaching in their synagogues and (N)proclaiming the [h]gospel of the kingdom, and (O)healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

24 And the news about Him spread (P)throughout Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and severe pain, (Q)demon-possessed, people with (R)epilepsy, and people who were (S)paralyzed; and He healed them. 25 Large crowds (T)followed Him from Galilee and (U)the Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judea, and from (V)beyond the Jordan.

The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes

(W)Now when Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on (X)the [i]mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. And (Y)He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,

[j](Z)Blessed are the poor in spirit, for (AA)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are (AB)those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

“Blessed are (AC)the [k]gentle, for they will inherit the earth.

“Blessed are (AD)those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

“Blessed are (AE)the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

“Blessed are (AF)the pure in heart, for (AG)they will see God.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for (AH)they will be called sons of God.

10 “Blessed are those who have been (AI)persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for (AJ)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people (AK)insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for (AL)in this same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Disciples and the World

13 “You are the salt of the earth; but (AM)if the salt has become tasteless, how [l]can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by people.

14 “You are (AN)the light of the world. A city set on a [m]hill cannot be hidden; 15 (AO)nor do people light a lamp and put it under a [n]basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may (AP)see your good works, and (AQ)glorify your Father who is in heaven.

A Glorified Zion

60 (A)Arise, shine; for your (B)light has come,
And the (C)glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
For behold, (D)darkness will cover the earth
And deep darkness the peoples;
But the Lord will rise upon you
And His (E)glory will appear upon you.
(F)Nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.

(G)Raise your eyes all around and see;
They all gather together, they (H)come to you.
Your sons will come from afar,
And your (I)daughters will be [a]carried on the hip.
Then you will see and be (J)radiant,
And your heart will [b]thrill and rejoice;
Because the [c](K)abundance of the sea will be turned to you,
The (L)wealth of the nations will come to you.
A multitude of camels will cover you,
The young camels of Midian and (M)Ephah;
All those from (N)Sheba will come;
They will bring (O)gold and frankincense,
And (P)proclaim good news of the praises of the Lord.
All the flocks of (Q)Kedar will be gathered to you,
The rams of Nebaioth will serve you;
They will go up on My (R)altar with acceptance,
And I will (S)glorify My glorious house.

  3. Isaiah 60:5 Lit roar

For I say that Christ has become a servant to (A)the circumcision in behalf of the truth of God, to confirm (B)the promises given to the fathers, and for (C)the Gentiles to (D)glorify God for His mercy; as it is written:

(E)Therefore I will [a]give praise to You among the Gentiles,
And I will sing praises to Your name.”

10 Again he says,

(F)Rejoice, you Gentiles, with His people.”

11 And again,

(G)Praise the Lord all you Gentiles,
And let all the peoples praise Him.”

12 Again Isaiah says,

(H)There shall come (I)the root of Jesse,
And He who arises to rule over the Gentiles,
(J)In Him will the Gentiles hope.”

13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all (K)joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope (L)by the power of the Holy Spirit.

14 And concerning you, my brothers and sisters, I myself also am convinced that you yourselves are full of (M)goodness, filled with (N)all knowledge and able also to admonish one another. 15 But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of (O)the grace that was given to me [b]from God, 16 to be (P)a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the (Q)gospel of God, so that my (R)offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. 17 Therefore in Christ Jesus I have found (S)reason for boasting in (T)things pertaining to God. 18 (U)For I will not presume to speak of anything [c]except what (V)Christ has accomplished through me, [d]resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed, 19 in the power of [e](W)signs and wonders, (X)in the power of the Spirit; so that (Y)from Jerusalem and all around as (Z)far as Illyricum I have [f]fully preached the gospel of Christ. 20 And in this way I aspired to (AA)preach the gospel, not where Christ was already known by name, (AB)so that I would not build on another person’s foundation; 21 but just as it is written:

(AC)They who have not been told about Him will see,
And they who have not heard will understand.”
